2015-16 Articling Students

Dara Hirbod

Dara has recently graduated from law school at the University of Windsor. Before studying law, Dara completed an MA in Political Science at Brock University and an Honours B.A. in Political Science at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. While completing his undergraduate degree, Dara was a three-year member of the Laurier Men’s Varsity soccer team. In his third year, the team won an OUA Championship and competed at the CIS Nationals.

At Windsor Law, Dara also played with the Windsor Lancers Men’s Varsity soccer team in his first year. On top of this, Dara remained involved in extracurricular activities at Windsor Law. He served as the VP of marketing for the Windsor Law Athletic Society, grad committee member, social orientation rep, and social committee member.

In his spare time, Dara enjoys wrangling fish, travelling, and home renovations.

Joshua Beattie

Joshua has recently graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School and is beginning his articles at Gardiner Roberts. Originally from Halifax, Joshua completed a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University prior to studying at Osgoode. While at Dalhousie, Joshua competed on the Men’s Varsity Basketball Team, winning an AUS Championship in the 2008/2009 season. He also worked in accounting for a large construction company headquartered out of Halifax and in marketing for a natural gas distribution company.

At Osgoode, Joshua was actively involved in the Law In Action Within Schools (LAWS) program, an organization that promotes the pursuit of post-secondary education among high school students in Ontario through school clubs, court tours, and mentoring programs. He was also a recipient of the Honourable F.H. Barlow Scholarship, awarded to students who exhibit excellence in commercial law and related courses. After his first year at Osgoode, Joshua worked in the legal department of a large mutual fund in Toronto. Prior to beginning articling, Joshua worked as a summer student at Gardiner Roberts.

Joshua enjoys anything sports related, especially golf and basketball, and is particularly fond of playing the piano and the guitar. In Halifax he was an avid sailor and is looking forward to renewing that passion in Toronto.

Christopher Junior

Chris is a recent graduate of the Juris Doctor program at the University of Windsor. He completed his undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University where he earned an Honours B.A with a major in Political Science and minor in Global Studies. Prior to commencing law school, Chris taught English in South Korea, managed a successful business in Toronto, as well as volunteered as a hockey coach and mentor to underprivileged youth.

At the University of Windsor, Chris remained active in extracurricular activities and in the greater Windsor community. He was the Vice President of Finance for the Windsor Italian Law Association and sat on the Board of Directors of CJAM 99.1, the University of Windsor’s campus based radio station. He acted as an executive member for the Career Development Advisory Committee and Windsor Law Movember Committee. In his third year of law school, Chris was awarded the Torkin Manes LLP Award for his combined academic achievement and service to the community.

Chris enjoys playing hockey, cycling, reading and camping.

Avi Weiss

Avi Weiss recently completed his J.D. (cum laude) from the University of Ottawa, Common Law program, where he earned a spot on the Dean’s List in his third year. Prior to law school, Avi studied Talmudic Law in Jerusalem before earning his B.A. with a Specialization in Business from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Avi also interned at a commercial real estate boutique firm in Toronto.

At the University of Ottawa, Avi served as Vice President of the Jewish Law Students Association. After his second year of law school, Avi was selected to participate in an intensive Global Technology Law & Policy course at the University of Haifa, Israel. In January of his third year, Avi interned with the legal department of a property developer in Toronto. Avi also played intramural ball hockey with the law school team.

Outside of work, Avi enjoys hockey, travel, and reading.

Fatema Jivaji

Fatema is starting her articles after finishing law school at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2015. She also attended Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany where she studied European Union law. She has also completed a BSc at Queen's University. Before starting law school Fatema worked in Ghana with Unite for Sight where she helped provide medical care in rural Ghana.

During law school Fatema was on the editorial board of the Transnational Legal Theory Journal. She also wrote public legal education materials for METRAC though Pro Bono Students Canada. Fatema was involved in the International Legal Partnership Program at Osgoode Hall Law School. Fatema worked in Bangalore, India where she conducted legal research relating to the rights of the child and authored submissions to the United Nations.

In her spare time, Fatema enjoys travelling, cooking, tennis and documentaries.
